Townley Grammar School

Townley Grammar School is a grammar school with academy status for girls on Townley Road, Bexleyheath, in the London Borough of Bexley, England. It was previously known as Bexley Technical High School for Girls. The school consists of Years 7–11, single sex (girls), and a co-educational sixth form boys and girls)


The school has a long and rich history, dating back to 1937 when it was founded as a technical school for girls. The school moved to its current site in 1954 and became a grammar school in 1976. The school has been recognised by the DfES as a Specialist School for the Performing and Visual Arts in 2004 and as a High Performing Specialist School with a second specialism in Mathematics and Computing in 2008. The school became an academy on 1st January 2012 and is therefore the admissions authority for the school.


The school offers a broad and balanced curriculum that caters for the needs and interests of all students. The school follows the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3 and offers a range of GCSE and A-level courses at Key Stage 4 and 5. The school also offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme as an alternative to A-levels in the sixth form. The school has a strong focus on academic excellence, with 93% of pupils achieving grade 5 or more at GCSE and 98.10% of pupils completing their main study programme. The school also provides a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, music, drama, art, clubs and societies, trips and visits, and leadership opportunities.


The school has excellent facilities that support teaching and learning. The school has a modern building with spacious classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, a library, an auditorium, a dance studio, an art gallery, a music suite, a sports hall, a gymnasium, an astro-turf pitch, and a swimming pool. The school also has access to cutting-edge technology, such as interactive whiteboards, laptops, tablets, digital cameras, and software applications.


The school is very popular and oversubscribed. The admission limit for September 2020 is 224. The school is one of four selective schools in the London Borough of Bexley and is a single-sex grammar school admitting girls in Year 7, with boys in the Sixth Form. The school selects its intake by reference to ability using the Bexley Tests developed by CEM.
